Welcome to Middle School

The TAS Middle School curriculum offers a rich, challenging and stimulating program, designed to generate an enthusiasm for learning and instil the value of learning as a lifelong process.

The curriculum aims to develop a strong foundation of skills, knowledge and understanding while meeting the unique needs of adolescent students in Years 6–8. Central to our philosophy is the belief that pupil motivation and self-esteem are undermined, not when too much is expected of them, but too little.

Students need to be challenged by offering them an array of learning circumstances, by setting high standards and by providing opportunities for students to be responsible and accountable for their learning. We believe that we will achieve this goal by providing a demanding, adventurous and well-balanced curriculum. Our Middle school is staffed by a team of talented teachers who are committed to working with this age group. Everything that happens at TAS – in the classroom, in the boarding house, on the sporting fields – is specifically designed with the educational and developmental needs of students in mind.

We prepare our students to be successful and active citizens who know how to set and reach high personal and professional goals. Our Middle School program provides the means for students to experience a smooth transition from primary to the senior school in an environment that fosters a sense of belonging, stability, security and happiness.

Following the successful implementation of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme in Junior School in 2017, the next strategic development in our academic vision was our application for IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) candidacy for Middle School. In 2020, TAS Middle School received full authorisation as an IB World School to deliver the MYP, with all subject areas in Year 6, 7 and 8 (MYP Year 1, 2 and 3) implementing the MYP framework, with our Year 8 students also participating in a Community Project. It is a journey that we are taking with students, staff and parents together, for the overwhelming benefit of our Middle School students. The NSW curriculum will still be at the heart of what is taught at Middle School, but the MYP changes how it is taught, encouraging a great level of inquiry, curiosity and exploration of the content as it is taught.
