Senior Boys’ Boarding

With almost 120 years experience in boarding, TAS is a leader in residential education. Almost half of our students in Middle and Senior School are boarders, giving the school a genuine residential culture that is the envy of many of our peers. Part of this is knowing how to embrace those intangibles that transform a place of residence into all the best aspects of home.

Home for our senior boys (Years 9-12) are three senior boarding houses Abbott, Croft and Tyrrell, specifically designed to accommodate approximately 50 students, or roughly 12 students in each year group. The accommodation varies between Houses, with some students in small shared bedrooms in Years 9 and 10 and separate study areas. Boys in Year 11 share a twin room while all students in Year 12 have their own study bedroom.

Each boarding house has wi-fi access and study rooms, common recreation areas, TV room and kitchens for students’ use and full access to the school’s sporting and recreational facilities.

Pastoral care in the boarding houses is lead by a Housemaster, who is a member of the school’s teaching staff. In each instance a deputy and residential assistants support them. Residential life provides excellent academic support for boarders. Senior TAS teaching staff offer weekend and evening in-house HSC tutoring. Boarders have a vibrant and happy social life, especially on weekends, with activities driven by the interests and initiatives of students with the support of the Housemaster and staff.

The social and recreational program for boarders will continue to develop around the interests of the boarders themselves and with their drive and motivation.

Outside of school hours, all boarders have access to the school’s excellent facilities, including the heated indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, gym and weights room. Boarders can take town leave during the week when they do not have other commitments.

While there is no set number of weekend exeats per term, all boarders are expected to honour their school and sporting commitments, and some weekends are closed due to specific activities.

A well-appointed Medical Centre is staffed by qualified nursing sisters who are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the school doctor also visits three mornings a week.
